The Film

[Rating:3.5/5]

Writer/director Paco Cabezas’ slick, high octane crime/action/comedy film Neon Flesh (Carne de neón) tracks the underworld aspirations of aspiring young street tough Ricky (Mario Casas). Abandoned by his prostitute mother at 12-years old, the now grownup street criminal is looking to strike it big as the owner of an upscale whorehouse, an effort to impress his mother Pura (Angela Molina) upon her impending release from prison. Enlisting his pimp friend Angelito (Vicente Romero) and his strongman sidekick Kid (Luciano Cáceres), Ricky uses his savings to purchase a group of smuggled prostitutes to start his business. Pura’s rlease from prison doesn’t bring the closure Ricky was seeking, however, as she is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and doesn’t even remember she has a son. Even more troubling, the gang of friends finds themselves running afoul of the big underworld crime boss Chino (Darío Grandinetti), who demands a payout, and a disabled porn queen who wants one of their women. This puts Ricky and company on course for a violently grand conclusion.

Neon Flesh does tend to drift of course a bit too many times, like Luc Besson at his worst, but also like Besson it’s visually stunning and populated by a cast of colorful characters that keep the action lively. The pace never stagnates for too long making this one pretty pleasing overall for action fans.

Video Quality

[Rating:4/5]

The original HD image, reportedly shot on the Red One cinematographic high definition camera, looks quite good. It has strong contrast with deep black levels and lots of detail. Video noise is limited, but there are spots where posterization is a bit obvious, mainly in darker areas of the image. Colors are nicely saturated and flesh tones look natural.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4/5]

While the Spanish DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (48kHz/24-bit) soundtrack is not the most engaging mix I’ve experienced from an action-crime film like this, it’s still a good one. Dialogue is clean, the dynamics are rather good and there is some nice use of the surround channels for mild discrete effects. Gunshots ring true with good heft supported from the subwoofer.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:3.5/5]

A hip and gloriously violent actioner, Neon Flesh tempers its most aggressive bloodletting with a sense of humor and sleek veneer. The quick pacing and quirky characters make this an action movie worth checking out for anyone into the genre.
