The Film

[Rating:1.5/5]

Halloween is fast approaching, which means it’s time for the exploitation horror films to hit store shelves and movie theatres in droves. This 2010 remake of the 1988 B-Movie horror film Night of the Demons is one such film.

Director Adam Gierasch’s direct-to-video take stays close to the original’s plot — it’s all sex, drugs, booze, and hot girls in trashy outfits. This one adds in an updated punk/hard rock soundtrack. The story is a group of friends head to a haunted house for a Halloween rave party and end up in a battle against a group of terrifying demons as a group of dead bodies in the basement — and some of the friends — begin to rise up and change into drooling, drooling, desiccated creatures.

The film features American Pie veteran Shannon Elizabeth and Terminator 2’s Edward Furlong, but even they can’t save the cliché script and repetitive horror that eventually becomes more boring and pointless than shocking and scary.

Video Quality

[Rating:3.5/5]

Night of the Demons was originally filmed on 16mm so there isn’t the same level of detail and color reproduction there might be in a 35mm film or HD video production. Still, the graininess adds to the horror atmosphere and the AVC/MPEG-4 1080p encoding has excellent shadow details and deep, inky blacks.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4/5]

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack is big and ambient when the hard rock soundtrack is blasting. The surrounds are filled with loads of atmospheric sound effects and the subwoofer also gets a bit of a workout during those part scenes.

Supplemental Materials

[Rating:1.5/5]

The video supplements are nothing really worth watching, but the audio commentary is a jovial listen that offers up some interesting information on the film and may actually make the film a bit more tolerable to watch.

The supplements provided with this release are:

  • Trailer (1.78:1; 1080i/60; AVC/MPEG-4)
  • Comic Con 2010 Introduction (1.78:1; 1080i/60; 0:01.07)
  • Behind the Bloodbath: A look Inside Night of the Demons (1.78:1; 1080p/24; 0:18.21) — Interview segments with cast and creators of Night of the Demons.
  • Audio Commentary with Adam Gierasch, Jace Anderson, Monica Keena, obbi Sure Luther, and John F. Beach

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:2.5/5]

Night of the Demons falls into the category of remakes that are completely pointless. Why redo a B-movie, no less, if you’re A) not going to improve it and B) not going to bring anything new to the film?  The film fails as horror, it fails as camp, and it certainly fails as a cult classic, but some horror fans looking for some new horror to check out over the holidays might want to give this a look, just rent it, don’t buy it.
