The Series
[Rating:4/5]
With the shocking conclusion of the second season Showtime’s comedy/drama Nurse Jackie ending with Jackie (Edie Falco) facing an intervention for her drug problem by her husband Kevin (Dominic Fumusa) and best friend Dr. O’Hara (Eve Best), the third season hits the ground running. Jackie is now under pressure more than ever at home and at work, struggling to keep her life in order and support her addiction to prescription pills while all eyes are on her. A new male nurse at work, Kelly (Gbenga Akinnagbe), constantly on her case, and drug testing policy make her task all the more difficult. Meanwhile, her two daughters have enrolled in a new Catholic school, putting financial pressures on her marriage and her oldest daughter Grace (Ruby Jerins) continues to grow all the more neurotic.
Nurse Jackie is completely addictive – no pun intended – television. A perfect look at real world problems with perfect chaser of humor to help wash it all down, the show never becomes overwhelmingly morose, even as it delves into the depths of the human experience.

A native high definition production, Nurse Jackie is presented in a progressive AVC/MPEG-4 1080p transfer on Blu-ray. The series has never been one that stood out graphically, but this release does in fact best the 1080i broadcasts by a very good margin, lacking all the artifacts like macroblocking and compression noise. Contrast is at s medium level, it could be stronger, but it is more than sufficient for the mostly well lit scenes taking place in the hospital.

Like Weeds, this is a other of Lionsgate’s lossless 7.1 audio mixes – DTS-HD Master Audio (48kHz/24-bit) – that seems like a bit of overkill given the sort of program material. However, Nurse Jackie‘s mix, in comparison to Weeds, does make slightly better use of the extra surround back channels with slightly higher atmospherics in the mix. There is clean dialogue and a good amount of dynamics.

The Definitive Word
Overall:
[Rating:4/5]
Nurse Jackie: Season Three continues its winning run in its third season and makes for compelling television. I hesitate to call this “dramedy.” It is, in fact, drama, with just the right blend of comedy to make enjoyable all the time. Recommended.
