The Series
[Rating:5/5]
In Season Two of Showtime’s Nurse Jackie Emmy Award-winner Edie Falco continues her brilliant portrayal of Jackie Peyton, the pill-popping nurse from a New York City hospital desperately trying to balance her grueling job with her domestic life and an extramarital affair with her hospital’s pharmacist (Paul Schulze).
In Season Two, Jackie’s life comes closer than ever to spinning completely out of control, with her drug habit becoming more burdensome, her boyfriend Eddie inserting himself into the life of her and her husband (Dominic Fumusa) and her oldest daughter Grace (Ruby Jerins) becoming increasingly neurotic. Will her husband find out about her affair? Can she keep her drug habit a secret from friends, family, and co-workers? The problems mount and the writing gets even more intense than in Season One. It’s a more than worthy second season for the Showtime series that should help the show continue to grow its audience.

Nurse Jackie is produced in high definition and its HD source arrives on Blu-ray in a wonderful AVC/MPEG-4 1080p transfer. There is strong detail, spot-on flesh tones, and vibrant colors. The picture is clean and absent heavy amounts of video noise or artifacts, white levels are strong without clipping and midtones are warm and rich.

Like Weeds, Nurse Jackie is another television series release from Lionsgate that features a 7.1 lossless mix. Also like Weeds, it seems like an odd choice for a 7.1 mix considering that there is not much activity at all in the surround and surround back channels. The DTS-HD Master Audio mix does provide a full and spacious soundstage when the series’ score kicks in, but otherwise it seems very front-heavy. Dialogue is intelligible and there’s a relatively wide dynamic range.

The Definitive Word
Overall:
[Rating:4/5]
The world of cable television has been pushing the envelope for years now with many politically incorrect comedies and dramas. Nurse Jackie is one of those envelope-pushing series. Perhaps more than any other medical drama on television, Nurse Jackie succeeds because it does not take itself so seriously, making it come across as more realistic, than, say, Grey’s Anatomy. This Blu-ray release from Lionsgate provides the series in an excellent, reference quality transfer that makes it the absolute best way to watch it. Highly recommended.
