The Film

One In The Chamber tells the story of Ray Carver (Cuba Gooding Jr.), the coldest assassin known in the business. After failing to eliminate a target while on mission in Prague, he triggers an Eastern European mob war that brings out the Soviet killing machine known as ‘The Wolf’ (Dolph Lundgren; The Expendables). Now it’s up to Ray to stop this seemingly unstoppable beast before all hell breaks down. What results is a rather run-of-the-mill actioner that is slightly entertaining thanks to Dolph Lundgren.
The storyline featured in One in the Chamber is devoid of anything remotely new, is completely by-the-books in almost every sense, yet the picture was still entertaining…somewhat I’ll stress. The action scenes are probably better than they ever physically should (or could) be, the locales are lush and gorgeous (this is more on how the film was shot, see that below), and the acting is actually not that bad. Cuba Gooding Jr., even though he’s basically fallen off the map outside of his last great film in Radio, turns in a decent performance handling the assassin role with believability. Lundgren, well Lundgren helps to make this a movie worth watching. He, akin to that of his recent roles in The Expendables, usually overacts, yet I never minded it. Perhaps this is because every time I see him on screen, I keep thinking back to Rocky IV, and his huge Russian performance. I guess aspects like these make One in the Chamber worth a rental if nothing else is piquing your interest at the RedBox.

Shot using the Red One MX, this 1:78:1 framed, AVC MPEG-4 encoded transfer is near excellent, something we’ve come to expect from most Red One footage. The film tends to focus on more of the brighter side of the color spectrum, with bright yellows, and blues. Detail impresses throughout with strong contrast levels. Flesh tones can lean toward the warmer, unnatural realm, but this isn’t overly annoying. Facial close-ups result in every little hair, every little pore, every little bead of sweat showing up. All in all, this transfer excels on nearly all fronts.
Audio Quality

Now this kind of surprised me. Typically films of this nature have a fairly impressive audio mix. Such isn’t the case with the film’s provided Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track, which lacks an overall punch. While dialogue is reproduced well via the center channel, everything lacks the overall quality a film of this genre would typically have. Gunshots felt flat, explosions lacked impact, even LFE was rarely active. I’m not 100% what may have caused this disappointment. Either way, definitely chalk this one up as something I certainly didn’t expect.

One In The Chamber is nothing new, in the slightest sense. Yet, the film is still somewhat enjoyable thanks to Dolph Lundgren. Anchor Bay’s Blu-ray features an excellent video presentation; however, the audio lacks and there’s no real features. I’m going to recommend this one as a rental on a slow RedBox night.
