The Performance
[Rating:4/5]
A living legend in the world of urban punk rock, Patti Smith had been a musical force for more than three decades when this 2005 Montreux Jazz Festival concert was recorded. The Patti Smith band features a bunch of terrific sidemen: Lenny Kaye and Tom Verlaine (guitars), Jay Dee Daugherty (drums), and Tony Shanahan (bass, keyboards). The playlist is a group of PS standard originals and covers:
- Redondo Beach
- Beneath The Southern Cross
- Dancing Barefoot
- Free Money
- Ain’t It Strange
- 25th Floor
- Like A Rolling Stone
- Seven Ways of Going
- Peaceable Kingdom
- Because The Night
- Not Fade Away/Momento Mori
- People Have The Power
Ms. Smith was pushing 60 when this video was shot, but from the energy invested in the session you would not have guessed it. Fans will be delighted with offerings that Patti and her bandmates provide on this well recorded Blu-ray Disc.

There are plenty of closeups of the distinctive Patti Smith features with extensive detail. Camera work is busy and gives an excellent account of the performers. My main gripe is the choice of the lighting hues which bathe the stage in sequences of lavender and bluish hues. This color palette also blunts some of the image clarity which, at times, is excellent.

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack is superb getting the instruments and their space just right with decent ambience. The 2-channel version is also quite good.

Some background liner notes by band member Lenny Kaye is about it.

Eagle Rock Entertainment offers up a great concert BD featuring one of the major rock ‘n roll presences of our times. Astonishing as it may be, Live at Montreux 2005 is Patti’s first “live” concert video. This artist never fails to bring it when she performs in concert and viewers receive just one great number after another. Take in the opening of Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away,” and you will get the message. Most of the Patti Smith band members have been with this singer for the entire ride and form as tight a group as one could hope for. Sound recording is tops and gives us a real sense of being there. My lighting gripe aside, this BD captures the action well. I am thankful that we finally have the opportunity to see what a living legend can really do. Highly recommended.
