SUMMARY

Hong Kong "supercop" Ka Kui teams up with his female Mainland China counterpart to bring down a drug smuggling ring in this third entry in the successful Police Story franchise.

Estimated reading time: 9 minutes

In Police Story 3: Supercop, which was re-edited and renamed for the US market as simply “Supercop,Jackie Chan reprises his role as Ka Kui. This time he is sent on an undercover mission to Mainland China where he is partnered with Insp. Jessica Yang – Director of INTERPOL (Michelle Yeoh) to help bring down an infamous drug smuggler named Chaibat (Kenneth Tsang).

This third installment, coming some seven years after the original Police Story, feels less of a true sequel, like Police Story II, and more like a completely new, almost disconnected story. Not that this film is bad – this film is in fact a stronger film than the second film. It feels custom designed to break Jackie Chan into superstardom in the West, which it succeeded in doing. It is an action-packed, location-hopping, almost Bond-esque spy thriller with lots of set pieces, and of course, the signature Jackie Chan death defying stunts mixed with comedy. Michelle Yeoh adds her superb talents to the mix and the banter between the two stars is priceless.

The US version of the film cuts over five minutes and brings the film down to a brisk 91 minutes. The opening scene with the police officials discussing the drug smuggling is gone and instead starts right on Chan arriving on the motorcycle, as one example of the changes.

The Video

All three of the Police Story films were released in 4K with Dolby Vision in the UK from Eureka Video and Police Story III looked the best out of those. This release, coming from that same Fortune Star restoration and master, looks the same. It comes in a 2.35:1 HEVC 2160p (4K UHD) Dolby Vision enocodement from 88 Films. The Dolby Vision is subtle, but the detail is crisp, and granularity is fine and organic. Flesh tones and colors are natural and the dynamic range provides excellent blacks and shadow nuance with bright, clipless white levels.

The Audio

Police Story III: Supercop comes with a lossless Cantonese Dolby Atmos mix. The Atmos mix is subtle, but there are some noticeable overhead sounds, such as drum rolls, and a wider soundstage than the 5.1 mixes. The foley effects are stagnant, without much panning, but like the 5.1 mixes, there is very deep low-end extension for when the explosions start.

The Supplements

88 Films once again deliver the good with a stunning release with brilliant artwork, high quality packaging, and a treasure trove of bonus features and collectibles.

Police Story III: Supercop adds to the avalanche of goodies and 88 Films have done it in fine fashion. This is one that should not be passed up. Highly recommended.
