Disney’s animated special Prep & Landing, winner of 4 Emmy Awards, is a bit of simple holiday season family fare that grownups and kids alike can enjoy when the family’s all together. The premise of the half-hour special (23-minutes minus commercials) and its somewhat less successful but still enjoyable follow-up, Prep & Landing: Naughty vs. Nice, is to place the focus on Santa’s elves rather than the big man himself. In particular, two members if his elite Prep & Landing team – you know, the ones who go out ahead and make sure all the houses are ready on Christmas Eve for his arrival? In the first special, The elf Wayne (Dave Foley) is passed up for a promotion by the big guy and has a rough go of it, especially when he his given a new trainee, Lanny (Derek Richardson). Not feeling up to the task, Wayne decides to literally lay down on the job, but causes big trouble when he is spotted by a kid and gets himself on the naughty list. Now, it’s a mad scramble to help Santa save Christmas and rescue his own reputation. In Naughty vs. Nice Wayne and Lanny are reunited for an adventure that finds them trying to recover classified North Pole technology from a young girl trying to get herself off the naughty list. But Christmastime just may turn out bad for everyone when things go haywire and every kid in the world ends up on the naughty list. A moral about friendship, family, and understanding, Naughty vs. Nice is a sweetly sentimental holiday tale. Each special is marked by excellent Disney CG animation, colorful holiday-themed landscapes, and best of all, wonderfully done voice acting.

We get a fine transfer of the original CG-animated specials in AVC/MPEG-4 1080p encodements on Blu-ray. The image looks clean, detailed, and three dimensional with vivid colors and no artifacting.
Audio Quality
[Rating:4.5/5]
Audio for both shows is provided in a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (48/24) mix that, while it doesn’t quite reach the level of a theatrical production, comes pretty darn close. Effects are panned through the channels often utilizing the surrounds effectively, there’s lots of atmospherics, and the low frequency extension gives everything a sense of weightiness.
