The Performance

[Rating:4.5/5]

Cutting to the chase, this is what a rock concert should be. Pretenders: Loose in L.A. is a moment in time captured by tip top video and audio recordists. Chrissie Hynde is a true rock legend and her band is no slouch either as they reprise a catalogue of the Pretenders’s three decade hit parade. There is so much joy in this concert that when Chrissie tries to downplay her self-admitted vocal shortcomings on this particular evening (“I got a shot of steroids in my ass”), the crowd goes wild. Considering the number of rock stars who have outstayed their welcome, it is invigorating to watch this video of an AARP rocker who can still bring it. There is an energy to the proceedings that is often missing from today’s scene. The videography is fairly standard concert pans and scans but with music making this great, who cares. You will get the picture and the sonic experience of a real concert. Nearly two hours flies by at the speed of light.

Video Quality

A 2003 video, so yesterday? The videographers have done their best to bring it to today’s audiences. Alright, there is some softness to the details. The camera work is beyond reproach and delivers the intimacy of front row seats to the viewers. Despite her typical heavy makeup, Chrissie looks pretty darn good for a 50-plusser. Two plus thumbs up.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4.5/5]

Rock concerts are about music, placing a premium on the soundtrack. Glad to report that the audio is outstanding. The vocals are upfront and the essential bass licks thump at heart-stopping volume.

Supplemental Materials

[Rating:3.5/5]

Some pretty good stuff here. The full length video of “You know who your friends are” is fabulous. The backstage frontage is OK. The concert montage is routine.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:4/5]

The longevity of Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders bears testimony to the quality of  their music. Little is spared in this no-holds-barred view of a disciplined, tight, and talented R’n’R band. It is one thing to survive the rock generation. It is yet another to rise to the top of the tree.  No doubt, it doesn’t hurt to have Chrissie’s chops or her extraordinary synergy with her bandmates. Newcomers, have no fear, this is a great concert and, unlike some of the one-offs to which we have been treated in the past, you will want to watch it again.
