It is hard to believe that the royal one (AKA Prince) is now 54 years old. 1999 was an extremely popular album following its release in 1982 and the playlist below contained a number of songs that went on to become big hits.
- 1999
- Little Red Corvette
- Delirious
- Let’s Pretend We’re Married
- D.M.S.R. (Dance, Music, Sex, Romance)
- Something in The Water
- Free
- Lady Cab Driver
- All The Critics Love U in New York
- International Lover
From first to last cut, this is rhythm-laced dance music that will get listeners shaking their respective booties. Prince is, if nothing else, a consummate pop musician who knows how to push his fans’ buttons. While these songs are not the last word in lyrics or hooks, they will get into your ears and stay there for a long time.

This is funky pounding syntho-pop dance music with a relentless pulse. While recording technology has advanced significantly in the 30 years following the release of 1999, this was already a pretty decent sounding album. This high-resolution remake lets you hear just about every last detail and with a lower noise floor than I remembered from the original.

The Definitive Word

A Prince album inspired Tipper Gore’s “Parental Guidance” labeling for CDs with sexually explicit lyrics. While the “PG” stamp does not appear to have cramped Prince’s album sales, the dominant theme of most of these songs is, well, sex. Obviously, there is a large audience for this music genre, if this artist’s popularity is any kind of gauge. Given the high quality of the mastering of this download, particularly in its 192 kHz/24-bit rendition, you will certainly hear Prince and his forces as the studio technicians intended.
