The Film

[Rating:3/5]

What’s left to add to this franchise that already gave us “The Final Destination”? Or were we just duped when they told us it was “final?” Apparently so, because here we are at the number five film in the franchise, which is now supposedly a prequel, but it really follows the same formula from every other film before it.

A group of coworkers headed out on a company retreat barely escape with their lives when their tour bus plummets into the waters below after the suspension bridge they are passing over collapses. The ominous disaster first revealed itself as a vision to one member of the group, Peter (Miles Fisher), but when he awakens from his vision and saves seven of his closest friends, including is ex-girlfriend Molly (Emma Bell), death isn’t happy. The group quickly realizes they can’t escape their fate, and death begins to stalk them, killing each of them one by one in the order they were originally meant to die.

The true guilty pleasure, if everyone is being honest, in watching any Final Destination movie is figuring out exactly how and where somebody is going to die a gruesome death, because you always know it’s coming. You’re just never really sure exactly how it’s going to happen.

In all, there are no surprises, but FD5 keeps the franchise alive on life support with a reasonable amount of new and unusual deaths.

Video Quality

[Rating:4.5/5]

Final Destination 5 was originally captured in HD 3D on Ari Alexa cameras at 4:4:4 1080p/24 resolution. We were sent the 2D-only combo pack to review, so no 3D here, but the 2D version in its AVC/MPEG-4 1080p/24 encodement looks really good nonetheless. There are inky blacks with strong shadow details, natural flesh tones and vermillion reds for all those oodles of CGI’d blood splattering across the screen. There aren’t any noticeable video noise or processing misdeeds to speak of.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4/4]

Audio is a beefy DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack that has smooth high frequencies and somewhat weighty lows that bolster the big opening scene of the bridge collapsing in particular. Surrounds are often brought in for discrete sounds when, well, you know, the bodies start getting fragged.

Supplemental Materials

[Rating:3/5]

There isn’t much here; apart from one promotional-type featurette on the film, there is one alternate scene and two brief side-by-side visual effects comparisons.

The supplements:

  • Final Destination 5: Circle of Death (1.78:1; 1080p/24; 00:05:39) – A brief featurette with the actors and filmmakers explaining the new prequel.
  • Alternate Death Scenes (2.35:1; 1080p/24; 00:15:48)
  • Visual Effects of Death: Collapsing Bridge (1080p/24; 00:09:16) – Side-by-side comparisons of the rough sequences and the final film.
  • Visual Effects of Death: Airplane Crash (1080p/24; 00:03:02) – More side-by-side comparisons.
  • BD-Live
  • Ultraviolet Digital Copy
  • DVD

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:4/5]

Fans of the Final Destination franchise will finds lots of familiar territory to satisfy their need for vicarious thrills here. This ostensible “prequel” plays it safe and follows all the rules of the previous films and keeps the audience guessing just enough to make it reasonably interesting.
