Here is the film that sent actor Hugh Grant into the stratosphere. 1994’s British romantic comedy Four Weddings and a Funeral is the amusing, cleverly witty and sharp story about a year and a half in the life of a man, Charles (Grant) and his group of friends told mainly at other people’s weddings – and one funeral.
Charles is in his early-thirties, but just hasn’t been able to settle down and find the right woman. Yet he somehow seems to keep ending up lately at other people’s weddings. This is where we first meet him, as the best man at his friend’s wedding, late, and without the rings. This is also where he meets the fun-loving, freewheeling American, Carrie (Andie MacDowell). Carrie is sexy, naughty, and everything Charles wants in a woman. The two find themselves sleeping together after the wedding and parting ways, only to bump into each other a few months later at another wedding, but this time Carrie is engaged. That doesn’t seem top stop them from falling into to bed together again. It’s an odd romance between two people who weren’t made for marriage, but are made for each other that plays out against the backdrop of other people’s weddings – including Carrie’s!
Four Weddings and a Funeral is one of those odd rom-coms that is actually funny to watch and won’t frighten all the men away – at least not once they really get into it. Right from the first act’s infamous opening blitz of f-bombs, you know you’re in for something very different and very grown up.
Video Quality

This looks like yet another MGM release that’s just been tossed onto Blu-ray by MGM with minimal restoration efforts. There are lots of instances of apparent source damage, especially at the beginning of the film. Dark areas show some video noise and there is an overall softness to the image. Otherwise the AVC/MPEG-4 encodement shows natural flesh tones and strong details in the foreground, but is not a particularly noteworthy edition.
Audio Quality

The soundtrack has been given a mild spruce up with a lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix. The sound is open and airy with a good bit of ambience and nice occasional use of discrete panning to the surrounds. Dialogue is clean with no hint of clipping. Otherwise, the mix is rather front-heavy, as one might expect.

A classic romantic comedy that’s full of charm and wit, Four Weddings and a Funeral has arrived in a Blu-ray release from MGM that leaves a lot to be desired in terms of picture quality, but it is still an enjoyable film.
