The Film

[Rating:4/5]

From Touchstone Pictures and Sir Elton John’s Rocket Films comes this fun animated twist on Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy Romeo & Juliet. Gnomeo & Juliet takes the story and transplants it to the secret world of garden gnomes, where the blue gnomes and the red gnomes from two separate gardens have been feuding for years. But when the blues’ Gnomeo (James McAvoy), undercover one night on a mission to get back at the reds, spies the disguised Juliet (Emily Blunt; Wild Target; Gulliver’s Travels) sneaking out to capture a rare gardenia from an abandoned garden across the alleyway, it sparks a forbidden romance that can only lead to trouble. The question is, will this romance lead to tragedy like Shakespeare’s original tale, or is there a happy ending for this unlikely couple?

The movie has a cheerful soundtrack featuring the songs of Elton John, some classics and some new ones, plus a perfectly cast ensemble doing the voices, which includes the unlikely Ozzy Osbourne as Fawn, Patrick Stewart as Bill Shakespeare and Jason Stratham as Tybalt.

3D Effect: [Rating:3/5]

The 3D effect on Gnomeo & Juliet is minimal at best. While the Full HD 3D 1080p MVC encodement does offer a better sense of depth than the 2D version, there is little pop-out effect. The color and detail strong and ghosting/crosstalk is minimal.

The standard 2D high definition presentation, offered here in an AVC/MPEG-4 1080p encodement, is perfect. Colors are vivid and every detail in the animation is visible, from the tiniest chip on the gnomes to the individual blades of grass in the gardens.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4/5]

A typically hyperactive soundtrack is supplied in the form of a DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 mix. The back left and right channels are used mainly for ambience, never really carrying any discrete information, while the surround channels are given some discrete sounds on occasion. There are extended lows, relaxed highs, clean dialogue and a wide dynamic range.
