It is one of the great geographical structures of North America, instantly recognizable to anyone across the continent and around the world, it is the Grand Canyon, carved out over thousands of years by the force of the Colorado River. In the original IMAX production Grand Canyon Adventure: A River at Risk, MacGillivray Freeman Films focuses on this iconic structure and the pressing issue now facing the Colorado River, that being a dwindling supply of fresh water. The film, narrated by Robert Redford, follows the Conservationists Wade Davis and Robert Kennedy, Jr. and native Havasupai park ranger and river guide Shana Watahomigie on a rafting journey down the mighty the Colorado River, while exposing the environmental issues that river faces.
The film is filled with stunning cinematography of the canyon and the river – beautiful vistas, grand aerial shots, rushing rapids, and the hidden, cerulean blue paradise that is the home of the Havasuai tribe. It’s spectacular eye candy worthy of the IMAX name and an excellent family outing for a slow weekend.

Grand Canyon Adventure was scanned at 8K (8192 pixel) before any blow-ups or processing was applied. In both the 2D and 3D AVC/MPEG-4 encodings of the film this certainly shows in an advanced level of detail, extremely fine grain structure, and spectacular color stability.
The 3D presentation of Grand Canyon Adventure is a solid one. The opening sequence of credits offers the most “pop-out” effects with a series of CGI bubble effects that leap right off the screen and levitate in front of your face, but other than that, it is a conservative but effective 3D presentation that has a strong sense of natural depth.
Audio Quality

The English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack is a typical IMAX documentary mix, meaning, it is big on the ambience and somewhat aggressive on foley effects in the surround channels with a big, full narration in the center channel. It offers up some wide dynamics, thunderous lows and a wide soundstage with excellent separation of sounds.

Most of the supplements offered on Grand Canyon Adventure feel rather promotional and willl not offer much replay value. The “making of” is, however, rather interesting and informative, but is unfortunately only in standard definition.
