The Film

[Rating:2.5/5]

Sometimes truth truly is stranger than fiction, and the evidence is clear by this typically zany film from Drew Carrey and company. I Love You Phillip Morris is based on the true story, but for certain filmmakers took lots of comedic license in telling this unlikely tale.

Steven Russell (Jim Carrey) is a happily married policeman living a quiet life until a near fatal car accident leads to a reassessment of his life, and his determination to come out to his wife that he is a homosexual. Soon, he is down in Miami with a new boyfriend, living the flamboyant lifestyle he always dreamed of by any means necessary. Those “means” happen to be becoming a conman, which gets him thrown into prison, where he meets the soft spoken, and very gay, Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor). The two fall in love and Steven is determined to get out of prison and get Phillip out as well. He succeeds, but soon he’s up to his old ways, which gets them both thrown back into prison and Steven must come up with the biggest scam of his life to break out – yet again.

The zany, offbeat film has its moments filled with laughs, but it’s all too tongue-in-cheek, with a “wink, wink,” and a “hey, look at how silly we two look being so flamboyantly gay” at the audience, which is very off-putting and tiresome after awhile.

Video Quality

While the image certainly looks bright with vivid primary colors and sharp detail, the AVC/MPEG-4 encodement of I Love You Phillip Morris is just a bit inconsistent. The grain structure jumps a bit in certain spots, imparting a gritty texture to the film, while other times it looks clean and crystal clear.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4/5]

There’s nothing particularly special about the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack offered up on this release. It provides the clean dialogue and low-level ambience in the surrounds that one would expect, but not very much beyond that.

Supplemental Materials

[Rating:2.5/5]

The weight of the supplements on I Love You Phillip Morris is in the numerous theatrical and internet trailers, which don’t offer much replay value. There’s also the obligatory audio commentary and making of featurette.

The supplements provided with this release are:

  • Commentary with writers/directors Jon Requa and Glenn Ficcarra, producers Andrew Lazar and Far Shariat, chief lighting technician Max Pomerleau, and director of photography Xavier Perez Grobet
  • The Making of I love You Phillip Morris (1.78:1; 1080i/60; 0:11.52)
  • Deleted Scenes (1.33:1; 480i/60)
  • Red Band Internet Trailer (1.78:1; 1080p/24)
  • Green Band Theatrical Trailer (1.78:1; 1080p/24)
  • Red Band Theatrical Trailer (1.78:1; 1080p/24)

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:3/5]

Jim Carrey doesn’t make as many films as he used to anymore, so when he does come out with movie, one would hope it would be much better than this. I’d have to recommend skipping this one.
