The Film

[Rating:3.5/5]

The “idiot” referred to in the title of this film from director Jesse Peretz is Paul Rudd (Dinner for Schmucks; I Love You Man) as Ned, a guy so seemingly clueless that the film opens with him getting busted for selling Marijuana to a uniformed police officer. Flash forward a bit and Ned is now out of prison early for good behavior, but when the modern-day hippie returns to his girlfriend’s bio-dynamic farm, he finds her with a new boyfriend. She throws him out and won’t even let him take his beloved dog, Willie Nelson. This Ned ends up back at home and in the lives of his three Type-A personality, neurotic sisters Natalie, Liz, and Miranda (Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer, Elizabeth Banks).

Ned’s presence immediately begins to disrupt his sisters’ lives, but in his own clueless way, he begins to open them up to his way of thinking. It is then we begin to realize that the “idiot brother” from the beginning of the film was never really an idiot, he has just always been very trusting and kind, thinking of others above himself. When the police officer told him he needed some weed because he had a bad day, Ned trusted him to do the right thing.

It’s not like Our Idiot Brother is a wholly new premise, it’s not. This sort of fish out of water, “odd couple” theme has been done time and again in film, but Our Idiot Brother is big hearted and well acted, and Rudd its all the right notes as do all the “sisters” in this family dramedy.

Video Quality

[Rating:4.5/5]

Captured on the RED ONE MX camera at 4.5K resolution with a 2K digital intermediate stage, Our Idiot Brother comes to Blu-ray in a strong AVC/MPEG-4 1080p encodement from Anchor Bay. The image is clean and sharp with good contrast, nuanced shadow details and spot on flesh tones. There are no apparent signs of video noise or compression and post-processing errors.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4/5]

Audio is a straightforward DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack that is front-heavy and keeps dialogue weighted to the center channel. It’s clean and dynamic with little atmospherics in the surrounds, but mostly comes alive when the soundtrack’s Wille Nelson tunes start playing.

Supplemental Materials

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:3.5/5]

A well made dramedy with a good heart, Our Idiot Brother is a pleasurable if not wholly original watch. The Blu-ray is a strong video production with a few extras to help round it out.
