The Shakugan no Shana saga finally comes to an end in season 3 (available in two parts from FUNimation). For fans who have been following this series from its beginning, through seasons 1, 2, the movie, and S, it offers some closure of sorts on what becomes of the love triangle between Yuji, the Flame Haze Shana, and Yoshida. The season in and of itself is an action-packed one that is really like one battle after the next between the Flame Hazes and the Denizens. Yuji returns the leader of the Denizens with a plan that will reshape the world as we know it and Shana, rather than follow along, decides that she must fight the man she loves with the help of all of her friends and allies. By the culmination of the story, most of the series’ subplots are wrapped up, but the writers did leave room for the series to return one day.

This series has never looked very good in high definition, but season 3 is a slight exception. It arrives with the same AVC/MPEG-4 1080p encodement as all previous editions. It still suffers from softness and motion artifacts, but it is a little better in overall appearance with slightly more crispness of detail and less noise.
Audio Quality

Audio is and has always been a bit of a step up on the Shakugan no Shana BDs and as always, season 3 provides a quality Japanese Dolby TrueHD 2.0 (48kHz/24-bit) stereo mix and a relatively engaging English dub in Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (48kHz/24-bit). The third season’s dub uses the same replacement cast from season two.

Season 3 of Shakugan no Shana brings to a conclusion a series that I found thoroughly enjoyable. Although the characters and ending of it all didn’t quite wrap up the way I expected from how it all began and where it went in season 2, I was fully satisfied with the outcome. Hopefully one day this series will be resurrected in a new version with another strong production.
