The Film

The star-studded big screen adaptation of Michael Connelly’s novel, The Lincoln Lawyer, is a fascinating legal suspense/thriller featuring solid performances from Matthew McConaughey, Marissa Tomei, Ryan Phillippe, William H. Macy, and Josh Lucas. The story follows the dealings of recently reinstated defense attorney, Mick Haller, who associates with lots of shady characters, runs his business out of an old Lincoln and is trying to rebuild a relationship with his ex (Marisa Tomei) who is not only a prosecutor, but also the mother of his daughter.

Mick gets a tip from a bondsman (John Leguizamo) on what seems like it could be the case of a lifetime. A wealthy young realtor (Ryan Phillippe) has been accused of raping a prostitute and he’s been specifically asked to defend him. The man, Louis Roulet, proclaims his innocence, claiming it’s all a setup to get money out of him, but as Mick investigates the case further, he realizes the case may have ties to an old murder case he handled. New evidence and circumstances put him, his career, his friends, and his family in jeopardy.

The Lincoln Lawyer will keep you guessing with numerous twists, constant thrills, and a number of unexpected surprises. It’s a well crafted and superbly acted legal thriller, one of the strongest I have seen on a long time.

Video Quality

Originally captured in HD at 4K on a Red One camera using Panavision Primo lenses, The Lincoln Lawyer looks very strong on Blu-ray in this 1080p/24 AVC/MPEG-4 encodement from Lionsgate. It has an unsurprisingly clean image with very little noise and, apparently, not much “grain” has been added in post production either. I’m a little uncertain whether I like this look or not, given that the movie can sometimes tend to look a little too much like video, despite the 24fps frame rate and cinematic lighting. Still, it looks very good with sharp detail, nuanced shadow delineation, inky blacks and natural flesh tones.

Audio Quality

Lionsgate has perplexed me again by pulling out a lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 mix on the least likely title to actually benefit from the extra titles. I sometimes wonder who makes these decisions. 7.1 mixes don’t pop up too often and I haven’t taken a scientific survey or anything, but Lionsgate has to be amongst the leading studios in offering them. It’s too bad that most of the the time, as is the case here, they provide romantic comedies or, in this case, a suspense/thriller with rather straightforward mix that doesn’t do much to show off the sound system. At least this mix does provide clean dialogue, natural sounding high frequencies and some mild expansion of the soundstage through use of mild atmospherics and occasional discrete panning.

There are some really good discussions with the original author as well as actor Matthew McConaughey and the filmmakers. Additionally there are the usual deleted scenes, digital copy, and included DVD of the film for a decent package of extras here.

An intriguing and well thought out legal thriller with strong performances and thoughtful direction from Brad Furman, The Lincoln Lawyer is a winner on Blu-ray and worth picking up; it makes for an excellent popcorn film.
