The Film

This iconic early-90s film is all about “grrl power.” The Oscar-winning screenplay (Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen) by Callie Khouri as directed by Ridley Scott would break boundaries in 1991, being one of the first outlaw films to to solely feature females in the lead the roles. It casts Susan Sarandon (Louise) and Geena Davis (Thelma) as two buddies who end up on the run from the law when one, Louise, shoots and kills a man after she stops him from raping Thelma.
Like a modern day Bonnie and Clyde, the two women make their way across the Southwest, becoming more embroiled in the criminal life – robbing stores, imprisoning police officers in trunks – as they make a run for Mexico with a lawman (Harvey Keitel) on their trail.
You won’t find any likable men in this film, from Thelma’s husband Darryl (Christopher McDonald), a verbally abusive man-child, to a hitchiker/crook (Brad Pitt) the two pick up on the road, each of the men in the film is despicable in his own unique way. That’s what helps make Thelma & Louise a paean to feminism. Strong women and weak minded men in an action-filled buddy film with strong characters, great acting and high quality direction from Ridley Scott – that’s Thelma & Louise.

For a twenty-year-old film, Thelma & Louise looks wonderful in this new high-definition transfer from MGM. It has been nicely cleaned up, making source damage hardly an issue, yet detail is still there with a tight grain structure. The transfer has good shadow delineation with dark blacks and natural flesh tones.
Audio Quality

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix is a pretty good one that offers a wide soundstage, large amounts of ambience and the occasional discrete front/back sound effects, like a plane flying overhead or a car engine revving by. The early line dancing is a fine example; the scene gives good low frequency extension, wide front stereo imaging and a good amount of dynamics.
