The Performance
[Rating:5/5]
Robben Ford is a guitarist who has been around the industry for quite some time. His roots are in the blues, having started a blues band with his brothers, but he quickly turned his attention to the booming jazz fusion scene in the 1970’s. He has worked with the Yellowjackets, Miles Davis, L.A. Express, Joni Mitchell and George Harrison.
This New Morning concert captured live in 2001 presents the guitarist once again returning to a more blues-oriented style. He is no doubt comfortable with the music, but by no means does his show sound stale. It offers up Robben Ford’s guitar with razor sharp riffs, melodic leads, and that shimmering, California harmony that has informed everyone from Creedence to Motley Crue. The musicianship here is stellar and not to be missed.

Video Quality
[Rating:2/5]
This is a 2001 production and the HD isn’t quite “HD.” The 1080i/60 AVC/MPEG-4 encoding seems to alternate between a very soft looking high definition and what is most definitely standard definition footage, probably from an SD camera somewhere in the mix. This won’t be the best looking concert disc you’ve ever seen, but this is all about the music, not really the video.

The audio for Robben Ford – New Morning: The Paris Concert is superb. Both the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (48kHz/24-bit) and PCM 2.0 (48kHz/24-bit) mixes supply good dynamic range, smooth high frequencies, tight lows and natural sounding ambience. The 5.1 mix is especially effective at capturing the sound of the performance space with its audience mix.
