Power Rangers Super Samurai is the nineteenth season of Power Rangers and is also back in the hands of Saban. What can one really say about this franchise at this point other than it continues to mainly appeal to that prime demographic of Nickelodeon-viewing boys. The plot, what little there is of it, rarely strays too far from the fundamentals. It’s a battle of good (our primary-colored superheroes) versus evil (all manner of icky looking alien baddies). Super Samurai finds the new generation of Power Rangers – Blue Ranger Kevin; Pink Ranger Mia; Green Ranger Mike; Yellow Ranger Emily; and Gold Ranger Antonio – in a fight against the evil Master Xandred and his minions the Nighloks, looking to flood the Earth with the waters of the Sanzu River to bring about the end life as we know it. Always straightforward and extolling the virtues of friendship, teamwork, and good physical fitness – with lots of martial arts action and somewhat cheesy visual effects interspersed over the course of its 20 episodes– Power Rangers will hit all the right notes for the kids, even as it leaves all us who are well past the sell-by date for viewing this sort of material scratching our heads.
Video Quality
[Rating:3/5]
From what I can tell, Power Rangers Super Samurai was shot on the Red One cinematographic high definition camera.Unfortunately, whether it is due to the relatively low shooting budget or just the inept qualifications of whoever is behind the camera on this series, Power Rangers just doesn’t look very good. The series never has a very cinematic appearance, that’s for sure, it more looks like consumer grade digital video and many darker scenes have an inordinate amount of softness and video noise. Despite that, I don’t think many of these issue have much to do with the AVC/MPEG-4 1080p encodement, but one can hardly rate this very highly regardless.
Audio Quality
[Rating:3.5/5]
Even the audio soundtrack, English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (48kHz/16-bit), doesn’t really sound that great on this release. The high frequencies are a bit grungy and tweaked, the surround channels carry no more than some low-level atmospherics, and the low frequencies are less than resounding given all the explosions and punches. At least dialogue is clear.
Supplemental Materials

A music video for a really bad pop song that may be right up the alley for the youngsters, a flash mob video of folks in Ranger outfits, and a brief Power Rangers exercise video are included.
The supplements:
- “Everyday Fun” Music Video (1.78:1; 1080p/24)
- “Swarm Flash Mob” Video (1.78:1; 1080i/60)
- Train Like a Ranger” Video (1.78:1; 1080p/24)
The Definitive Word
Overall:
[Rating:3/5]
This set may make a great stocking stuffer for a youngster you know, but I can hardly give it stellar reviews. It’s good for what it is, fun and mindless entertainment for kids, but beyond that, it’s not much at all.
