The Film
[Rating:4/5]
Previously released in a smaller package, this new release chronicles the San Francisco Giants’ 2012 run to the World Series. The set itself is beautifully constructed with 8 different slim disc packages, each housing a particular game. Included here are the NLCS Game 5, NLDS Game 5, and the World Series Games, 1, 2, 3 and 4. As well as these games, the Giants’ first perfect game has also been thrown in, where Giants Pitcher Matt Cain threw 125 pitches, striking out 14 to match Sandy Koufax for the most strikeouts ever.
As the title of this set indicates, the San Francisco Giants’ 2012 World Series run was something that might have been viewed as improbable. Wait, didn’t they finish with a Western Division best record of 94-68? “Yes” would be the correct answer; however, as the Post Season began, the Giants looked like they would be the last team that would win it all. Why you ask? Well, watching the NLCS series versus the Cincinnati Reds – especially with the quick 0-2 hole they dug themselves – residents of the Bay Area quickly wondered if their favorite team would quickly exit the chase. Well, with a series of improbable comebacks – including Barry Zito’s huge win against St. Louis – San Francisco were able to scratch together an improbable run culminating in baseball’s grandest prize.

This 2012 World Series is presented with a 1:78:1, AVC MPEG-4 encoded transfer. The games’ 720p HD productions look just as solid as a port-over can look. The color palette here accurately captures all the different uniforms and locales quite well, from the sun-soaked San Francisco landscape to the cold, barren Detroit finale. Close-ups do result in accurate contrast levels, as well as flesh tones. All in all, this is a good transfer, but I would have preferred if these were sourced in 1080p.

Featuring an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0, I found this lossless offering for these 2012 games to be comparable to their broadcast counterparts. The different commentators dialogue comes through clean, with no instance of drop out or any real issue to speak of. We’re given 3 different tracks here, one for the Giants, one for the Tigers and the live comments from Fox Sports team (I found the latter to be the best.) LFE is reserved for a few crowd cheers, while atmosphere does place us in the middle of the stadiums during the heightened moments.

Regardless if you’re a fan of the Giants team or not, this set is a wonderful package for longtime baseball fans and newcomers alike. What the Giants were able to achieve is truly legendary. Recommended as a nice holiday gift.
