This predictable teen romantic comedy, She’s All That, preceded the remarkably similar teen romantic comedy of the same year 10 Things I Hate About You, by only a few months. It makes one wonder if the executives at the big Hollywood studios actually get together and discuss what stories they want to push on the younger audiences each year. Actually, these sorts of stories have been hiting the big screen for teens since I was in that age group back in the John Hughes days.
She’s All That revolves around the story of a rich and popular high school jock, Zack (Freddie Prinze, Jr.) whose girlfriend dumps him at the beginning of senior year after she starts dating a reality TV star. Zack, meanwhile, chided by his pals, makes a bet that he can take any girl in the school and turn her into someone who can beat out his ex for prom queen. In steps the quiet, artsy, clumsy, and much less financially well endowed Laney (Rachel Leigh Cook). Zack immediately starts courting Laney, but quickly discovers he really likes her and is sorry he made the bet in the first place. Laney, meanwhile, with the help of Zack’s sister goes from drab to glam and becomes a strong candidate in the running for prom queen. But when Zack’s ex breaks up with her new boyfriend and his friends begins to get jealous, things get complicated.
It won’t be too difficult to figure out exactly how everything winds up in She’s All That. The main attraction here, if you’re a guy, is the gorgeous Rachel Leigh Cook, but, let’s face it, if you are a guy, you probably won’t be watching this – at least not without your girlfriend or significant other in the room. Freddie Prinze, Jr. has no acting chops and it shows, even in this 1999 effort. In the end, this is teen nonsense best left as a memory from your past.
Video Quality

Although this is one of the better offerings from Lionsgate’s recent rush of Miramax releases, it is hardly an eyeopener. The AVC/MPEG-4 transfer looks like it is taken from an old DVD master, which doesn’t make for a sparkling HD image, but at least the image here doesn’t suffer from a lot of source damage or too much video noise. Still, the grain structure isn’t very well defined, contrast is middling at best and detail isn’t always as strong as it could be. Colors look reasonably good.
Audio Quality

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (48kHz/24-bit) soundtrack is your average rom-com mix. That is to say that there isn’t much going on at all, it is mostly front-heavy, and the surrounds are on the silent side. Still, the dialogue is clean and intelligible and dynamic range doesn’t sound too squeezed.

This is a rather barebones offering from Miramax/Lionsgate that offers no new extras. I’m sure most people old enough to remember when this film was in theatres will also recall the Sixpence None the Richer song “Kiss Me” from the soundtrack, the music video for which is provided on here alongside an audio commentary and theatrical trailer.
