Sony Corporation today revealed their massive plans for 3D coverage of the upcoming 2010 FIFA Worldcup. Among the list of announcements from the company, was their plan to release the official FIFA World Cup film to 3D Blu-ray in 2010.
There will be a total of seven pairs of Sony’s professional HDC-1500 cameras on rigs at every match to capture the action on the pitch in 3D quality enabled utilizing its proprietary multi-image processor (model: MPE-200) and 3D Outside Broadcast truck.
Sony says that, starting from the FIFA Confederations Cup last year in South Africa, the company has been working on enhancing the 3D capturing of fast-moving football action and has since conducted a number of 3D filming trials in Europe.
Five out of the 10 FIFA World Cup stadiums will be used for 3D filming: Soccer City and Ellis Park in Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth and 25 matches in total will be filmed and broadcast in 3D. The matches will be carefully chosen for a “selection of those games expected to attract most public attention.” Those matches that will be captured in 3D will include the opening match between South Africa and Mexico at Soccer City on June and the final game on July 11 also in Johannesburg.
