Stone Temple Pilots, one of the big acts to emerge during the 90s grunge scene, resurfaced in 2009 with their first self-produced album of their career, the self-titled Stone Temple Pilots, their tenth album. The 2010 tour, captured here, supported that album and this show at Chicago’s Riviera Theatre catches the guitar-heavy, post-punk group – original lineup still in tow – burning through a high octane set that mixes all their old hits with tracks from their new album.

The “classic” STP tracks like “Interstate Love Song,” “Plush,” and “Creep” standout in the set, but newer tracks like “Huckleberry Crumble,” “Between the Lines,” and “Bag Man” fall flat, sounding like some sort of bad 70s FM radio throwback.

The image for Stone Temple Pilots: Alive in the Windy City is relatively strong for a concert video even though it does show strong levels of video noise. The choppy edits, flashing lights, and mostly dark setting make it less than ideal, but this AVC/MPEG-4 1080i/60 transfer probably shows the show as close as possible to its source.

Audio Quality

In general, the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (48kHz/24-bit) track that is offered up with this release is a good one. It doesn’t seem to have its dynamic range squeezed too much, which is a good thing, and it has deep yet tight and musical lows. Vocals are clear and clean and the midrange is punchy. I did find the high frequencies, particular in the guitars, sounded just a little too edgy and became a little fatiguing at higher volumes over the length of the show. LPCM 2.0 (48kHz/24-bit) and Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtracks are also provided.

Alive in the Windy City would have been a superb show if it weren’t for the lesser quality tracks from STP’s latest album interspersed throughout the otherwise solid set. Grunge may be long forgotten, but these guys can still rock hard, so even with the slightly disappointing new material, this is one worth checking out for Gen-Xers.
