The Film

Storage24_1

Storage 24 tells the story of London being under chaos after a military cargo plane crashes, leaving its highly classified contents (read: monsters) all across the city. Unaware that the city is on lock down, exes Charlie (Noel Clarke) and Shelley (Antonia Campbell-Hughes), along with their friends Mark (Colin O’Donoghue) and Nikki (Laura Haddock) soon find themselves trapped (somehow) in the Storage 24 facility – along with (of course) this mysterious content. What results is a mostly entertaining sci-fi romp.

Storage24_2

I’ll begin by saying that Storage 24 is, by no means whatsoever, a ‘good’ film. The film, at times, takes itself WAY too seriously with how the actors handle themselves, as well as the plot in and of itself. Still, despite these known facts, I’d be a complete liar if I didn’t admit that this sci-fi romp is entertaining. Perhaps its because of these aforementioned aspects, you know the overacting (screaming at times for no reason,) that I found myself smiling at times. Not necessarily because the film  is of high quality – more because it was entertaining. That is really all I can ask for with the films I see. Sure, quality is key; however, if quality isn’t there, if the movie is enjoyable, I suppose that’s all I can ask for.

Storage24_3

Despite being a rather low budget affair (rumored to be under 10M,) Storage 24 still arrives with a 1:85:1 framed, AVC MPEG-4 encoded transfer, one of which is quite solid. Shot with Arri Alexa Cameras, the film has a grayed out, low lit style to it. Facial close-ups result in accurate flesh tones, as well as contrast levels. Nothing has been overly pumped up, resulting in a natural, clean look and feel to the print. There’s no evidence of print damage, nor any use of any scrubbing tools. The film’s color palette hits well too with blacks, while clarity is spot on.

Storage24_4

This Blu-ray disc includes a lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix, available in English. For whatever reason, I never expect these lower budget films to have decent sound mixes. This trend continues as I figured Storage 24 would have an acceptable mix, you know the kind that serves the film well, but does nothing to really impress. Such isn’t the case here, as this included lossless mix is near perfect. Dialogue is well reproduced via the center channel, while atmosphere (perhaps the best aspect of this track) seemed to constantly have SOMETHING occurring. Whether it be the little effects echoed by the creatures, or simple background dialogue, atmosphere easily helps to throw us right in the middle of the action. LFE hits well, thanks in part to the film’s score (as generic as it may be.)

The Definitive Word

Magnolia’s Storage 24 is over-the-top at times with the plot and acting – yet, the film is still entertaining enough to warrant a rental.
