Strawberry Marshmallow: The Complete OVA Series (TheaterByte Blu-ray Review)

strawberry-marshmallow-ova-packshotStrawberry Marshmallow: The Complete OVA Series brings together the three episode OVA and two episode Encore arcs of this sugary sweet, almost too cute to not instantly fall in love with slice-of-life series into one collection on Blu-ray Disc. The central characters Chika, Ana, Miu and Matsuri get things started in the three OVA when Miu, her usual hyperactive and troublesome self, strawberry-marshmallow-ova-still-1draws a target on her best friend Chika’s forehead that says “Fire.” In the Encore, Miu declares her intentions to become an Idol and promptly hits her head, knocks herself out and then has a wild dream where she is caught between the realms of heaven and hell. The rest of the time throughout the episodes, we get more of the same as the girls try to study; try to “improve” the timid Matsuri-chan; go for a trip to the beach with Chika’s older sister Nobue, or play dress-up to see who’s the cutest. These 5 episodes are all too brief, but certainly maintain the same level of fun, straightforward, and sometimes-saccharine comedy that makes Strawberry Marshmallow so endearing.

The Video

strawberry-marshmallow-still-2Strawberry Marshmallow: The Complete OVA Series arrives in an AVC 1080p encodement that presents the digital animation with a clean, crisp, and colorful image that looks as delectable as a creamsickle. The colors are bright, the line art is clearly visible and motion artifacts are a no-show.

The Audio

The original Japanese soundtrack is included in DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 stereo and is as fine as the audio strawberry-marshmallow-ova-still-4track from the Strawberry Marshmallow TV Series disc. The voice cast is excellent – very kawaii – and the sound, while not a showpiece like other more action-oriented series, has more than adequate stereo imaging, dynamic range, and ambience in its two channels.

The Supplements

Clean openings and closings and Sentai Filmworks trailers are included.

The Final Assessment

Strawberry Marshmallow: The Complete OVA Series offers a wonderful companion to the funny and charming Strawberry Marshmallow TV series release. The five episodes are just as much of a fun look into the daily lives of these elementary school girls.
