The Film

[Rating:2/5]

At this point just about everyone knows what to expect from a Steven Seagal movie going in. There’s going to be good guys. There’s going to be bad guys. There’ll be a lot of guns firing and a lot of butts getting kicked. And that pretty much sums up Street Wars.

In this latest Seagal vehicle, he of the never-greying slicked-back hair plays Kane, head of a Seattle Sheriff’s department special ops team. There are some really bad designer drugs on the streets and teenaged ravers are dropping like flies. Kane and his crew need to find the source and take them down quickly, doling out their own brand of badass justice along the way.

Meanwhile, they’ve been saddled with acting as bodyguards for a documentary filmmaker looking to get a look at Seattle’s underbelly. This only complicates matters – as if the story wasn’t complicated enough. There’s the drugs, crime bosses, the mayor’s son, who’s a member of Kane’s team coming under attack, and his inside source at the DEA showing up dead as well. It’s best not to wrap your brain around it too much and just enjoy the badassness of Seagal – if that’s even a word.

Video Quality

[Rating:3.5/5]

The 1.78:1 1080p/24 AVC/MPEG-4 transfer of this HD captured flick looks okay. It doesn’t have a particularly film-like quality as some hi-def productions do these days, this looks like straight video, but that’s not really the issue. The problem here is that there is some color banding throughout the film that plagues the otherwise good looking image.

Audio Quality

[Rating:2.5/5]

I’ve heard aggressive mixes before, but the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix for this release is so aggressive in its use of the surround channels that it is out of balance. There is so much discrete information and ambient sound effects pumped into the surround channels, even the music has its instrumentation mixed in a discrete manner, that the mix is rear-heavy. That’s not something I have ever come across in all my years of reviewing these discs. There was even one point where the sound effects from the surrounds drowned out the dialogue from the center channel. Besides that, the high frequencies are very grungy sounding, which makes them fatiguing.

Supplemental Materials

I’ve decided I’m not going to dole out ratings points any longer for releases that only provide a trailer of the actual release as their sole “supplement,” which is the case here.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:2/5]

A typical Seagal direct-to-video crime drama that is too complicated for its own good, Street Wars lacks the punch of a good, mindless action flick making this one not even worth a rental.
