Some readers may have noticed that our recent review of The Right Stuff 30th Anniversary Blu-ray Book lacked any reference to the supposed Dolby TrueHD 96kHz/24-bit upsampling feature meant to be included on the disc. That is because, despite announcements and labeling on the package, it didn’t have any. It was just a straight Dolby TrueHD 5.1 48kHz/24-bit soundtrack. For those who do not know, the TrueHD 96k upsampling is a software side solution that upsamples 48k PCM audio in the mastering stage allowing DACs to operate at their most efficient levels, removing the task of upsampling from the home users’ systems.
Our contact at Dolby informed us that “[Warner] has become aware of and confirmed that The Right Stuff 30th Anniversary Blu-ray Book released on Nov. 5, 2013 went to market without the 96K upsampling feature enabled. Steps are being taken to resolve the issue at the current time. ”
What steps Warner will take are not known at this time, but it is conceivable that some form of recall program may be in the works. We’ll keep you posted here when more details become available to us.
