The Film
[Rating:3/5/5]
NFL fans and, in particular, Giants fans, can relive the glory of the 2011 championship season with this documentary from NFL Films. Super Bowl XLVI Champions: New York Giants recounts the tumultuous season that took Big Blue, under the coaching of Tom Coughlin and the arm of Eli Manning from a 6 – 2 start and 7 – 7 stumble right into the Super Bowl against their old 2008 Bowl rivals the New England Patriots. And, granted, they may not actually play in New York, but certainly these East Rutherford New Jersey guys provided a spark for the entire sports loving metropolitan area to be sure.
Video Quality
[Rating:4/5]
Super Bowl XLVI Champions: New York Giants gets the gritty look that NFL Films typically favors in a 1080i/60 AVC/MPEG-4 transfer to Blu-ray that looks about as good as a sports documentary like this can. Don’t expect the live, life-like appearance of a game day broadcast, but, rather, a more textured and filmic presentation that adds a sense of weight and dramas to the story.
Audio Quality
[Rating:4/5]
Audio is two DTS-HD Master Audio (48kHz/16-bit) mixes in 5.1 and 2.0 Stereo. The 5.1 surrounds you with just a hint of the occasional crowd noise n the surround channels and clean, full narration in the center channel. The stereo mix loses some of the spatial depth, but for this material, won’t be that much of a drop in quality.

The Definitive Word
Overall:
[Rating:3.5/5]
This is the sort of release that has a definite and somewhat narrow audience. Personally, I haven’t followed the NFL or much of any American sports for nearly 15-years, preferring to watch rugby and tennis, so a release like this is certainly not aimed at me. However, for fans, this highlight of the winning season is well worth watching, but maybe not owning. Rent it, unless you are a true blue super fan.
