The Film

[Rating:1/5]

In the great tradition of movies featuring killer cars on the rampage like Christine or even the far cheesier Maximum Overdrive comes…ah, hell, I can’t go on. Truth be told, Super Hybrid is an absolute mess from start to finish that doesn’t come close to approaching either of those two films. I was actually looking forward to reviewing this one. I mean, who doesn’t love a great car flick for the summertime, right? Well, this is far from great.

A group of Chicago city auto repair workers find themselves fending off a killer car that can change shape into any automobile it wants. For whatever reason, it decides to corner them in their repair shop. Oh, and the car? It just happens to be a monster squid that can change shape. Did I just give away the secret? No worries. That little tidbit is given away in the first ¼ of this dud anyway. Somehow they managed to rope the excellent character actor Oded Fehr (TV’s Covert Affairs; The Mummy) into this one; poor guy.

Video Quality

[Rating:3.5/5]

Captured in high definition on a Red One camera, Super Hybrid comes to Blu-ray in a 1080p/24 AVC/MPEG-4 encodement. It looks really good at times, and at other times, it’s a bit blah, smothered in video noise, and just rather flat. Blacks are rather inky and shadow detail is good, but this is certainly no reference quality image.

Audio Quality

[Rating:3.5/5]

The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 soundtrack is a bit too unbalanced and boomy, so much so that it just becomes a distraction after a while. The surround channels are used rather aggressively, but there just doesn;t seem to be a general cohesion to this mix. Dynamics are far too wide On the other hand, dialogue is clean and remains pretty clear throughout.

Supplemental Materials

All you get on this barebones release is the Under the Hood of Super Hybrid featurette.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:2/5]

Skip this one, even if you’re tempted to rent it, it’s probably not worth it. It fails as a horror film and certainly fails as an action film.
