The Film

[Rating:3/5]

When I first heard they were making an A-Team movie, I was unconvinced that the 80’s television series could possibly translate well to the big screen. It is so entrenched in the popular culture of the day and 1980’s cheese that rebooting the franchise could only be a bad thing, right? Well, yes and no.

The filmmakers have done a surprisingly good job of turning The A-Team into a big screen blockbuster. This is a relentless, action-heavy CGI dream that the original cast of The A-Team never imagined. They’ve even found an appropriate stand-in for the Mr. T character B.A. Baracas in the person of Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson. The problem is, that is pretty much all there is to The A-Team on film — all Hollywood spectacle, no depth.

The story is pretty much as it was when the original series aired back in the Paleozoic era, a group of war veterans, updated to the Iraq war this time around, are framed and go on the run from the military. As fugitives, they look to clear their names.  Liam Neeson steps into the role of Hannibal, Bradley Cooper plays the pretty boy Faceman, Sharlto Copley plays the crazy Murdock, the aforementioned Rampage Jackson is B.A. and the always-charming Jessica Biel is Faceman’s love interest Captain Charissa Sosa.

If you love action, you’ll love The A-Team, but after about forty-minutes in, you’ll also realize that not much is going on in this convoluted story.

The A-Team looks great on Blu-ray and its AVC/MPEG-4 1080p/24 encoding is bound to shoot up to the top of the enthusiast ranks for reference materials. It’s clean and sharp with great black levels and just the right amount of grain structure.

Audio Quality

[Rating:5/5]

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack is an enjoyable fest for the ears. It’s predictably aggressive action fare, but it’s done well, with easygoing high frequencies and lows that extend just enough to rumble without drowning out the rest of the mix. The surround channels are aggressively used for discrete sound effects and there is a good dynamic range.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:4/5]

The A-Team offers up a grand home theatre experience on Blu-ray. Its action-heavy story and razor thin plot will make for the perfect popcorn get together on the weekend.
