The Adventures of Batman AKA Batman with Robin the Boy Wonder is an animated television series that ran from 1968-1969. It is made up of 17 episodes that were originally part of The Batman/Superman Hour before being broken out into their own series. Olan Soule (Batman) and Casey Kasem (Robin) voice the heroes. People of a certain age will be instantly familiar with the atmosphere in this series as it is the same sort of campy, colorful, and lightly comedic romp that would appear again in the live-action series The New Adventures of Batman (1977) which starred Adam West as the Caped Crusader and Burt Ward as his sidekick Robin. Over the course of these episodes the Dynamic Duo butt heads with a rogue’s gallery of familiar villains in Gotham City from The Joker, to the Penguin, to Catwoman. There is no strong story arc across these episodes, they just play like a series of self-contained, short vignettes. They’re fun, without any of the darkness that has come to define this DC character in more modern, post-The Killing Joke times.

The Video

The series episodes have been masterfully restored in a 1.33:1 AVC 1080p encodement on Blu-ray. I have no reference on a previous home video release to compare this to, but the image looks very colorful, detailed, and shows little source damage without being completely scrubbed of its natural grain.

The Audio

The Adventures of Batman comes with the original mono mix in DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono. The sound is good given the age, number of channels, and the fact this is a television mix. Dialogue is clean and sound effects have good impact.

The Supplements

There are no supplements on this release.

The Final Assessment

File this one under ‘nostalgia’ for those of a certain age. It looks great and is a fun part of the Batman history. Recommended for completists.

The Adventures of Batman is out on Blu-ray 28 February 2023 from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.
