Writer/director Robert Rodriguez brought the style from his Spy Kids films to this 2005 special effects-driven sci-fi action/adventure film, The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl. The story itself crosses over into the land of fantasy, following the adventures of the young Max (Cayden Boyd) whose daydreams about the half shark/half boy Sharkboy (Taylor Lautner) and the girl made of lava, Lavagirl (Taylor Dooley) come to life. Max must then go to their home planet Drool, a place that was supposed to be one filled with constant fun, but is now falling into darkness, and help rescue it from the evil Mr. Electric and his boss.
The special effects that made films like Spy Kids cool and visually appealing are all there and the kids will certainly like the colors, quick pace, and absurd situations, but this film just does not live up to the expectations set by spy kids. The story is too silly with many holes in the plot and there isn’t much here that parents will find interesting.

Sharkboy and Lavagirl was captured on HDCAM and although it comes to Blu-ray in 1080p/24, it never looks very film-like. There’s a smooth, soft look to the image overall, but it does have great colors.
Audio Quality

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack is as active and dynamic as one would expect a film like this to be. The surround channels are actively engaged straight through with lots of discrete sounds, low frequencies are pretty extended, but not resounding and ground shaking. Dialogue is clean and stays audible during the loudest passages.

The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl may find an audience amongst the kids, but really it is just a lesser version of the Spy Kids films, and Miramax/Lionsgate haven’t even seen fit to release the 3D version of Blu-ray. Stick to a rental if you really need to see this one.
