The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari 4K Ultra HD Review

Estimated reading time: 6 minutes

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is the 1920 silent film by German director Robert Wiene. A German expressionist landmark long heralded as the birth of the horror genre, the story, scripted by Carl Mayer and Hans Janowitz, follows titular character Dr. Caligari (played by Werner Krauss), a nefarious hypnotist who plays the carnival circuit with a somnambulist named Cesare (Conrad Veidt) who wows crowds by claiming to be able to tell their futures. At night, in a small German town, a series of murder takes place, and suspicion falls on Caligari, especially by Francis (Friedrich Feher) whose friend is among those who are killed.

Calling Dr. Caligari influential would be an understatement. Not only would the horrific subject matter spawn the offshoot horror genre, but the expressionist style of the film, set in an angular world of shadows and unreal sets that are out of place and out of this world would go on to influence film noir, reappearing in works like M from Fritz Lang, the numerous works of Billy Wilder, or even the more contemporary Tim Burton.

The Video

Kino Lorber presents the F. W. Murnau Stiftung’s meticulous 4K restoration of the film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari on 4K Ultra HD in a 1.37:1 HEVC 2160p (4K UHD) SDR encodement. The extensive restoration taken from the original negatives apart from the first reel, which could not be found and was reconstructed from differing sources, looks miraculous given the film’s now 104-year-old vintage. I find it very hard to see any difference between this release and the 2022 release on 4K from Masters of Cinema in the UK. The age issues aside, especially in the first act, this now 104-year-old film looks brilliant given its age. The tinting is vibrant and the presentation wisely stays away from adding HDR given the source’s limited dynamic range and that HDR would highlight the damage present in the source.

The Audio

This release comes with a with a new orchestral score by Emmy®-winning composer Jeff Beal (House of Cards), which had its premiere performance at Carnegie Hall on June 3, 2024. It is presented in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 stereo. There is also the 2014 orchestral score in DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 stereo and on Blu-ray only a score by Paul D. Miller (AKA DJ Spooky) in Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo. The sound is excellent for all versions. The 5.1 mixes are front-based with ambiance in the rear channels, as a typical orchestral 5.1 mix usually is. Your choice for score will depend on your preference. Personally, I prefer the mush less bombastic 2014 score.

The Supplements

If you are looking for a more robust collection of bonus features then the UK release from Masters of Cinema is the way to go, but this Kino Lorber release does get an audio commentary and a documentary on how Caligari introduced horror to cinema.

Blu-ray Only Bonus Features:

  • Audio Commentary by Jeff Beals
  • Caligari: How Horror Came to the Cinema (1080p; 00:52:52)
  • Restoration Demonstration 1 (1080p; 00:01:17)
  • Restoration Demonstration 2 (1080p; 00:02:42)

The Final Assessment

An early masterpiece from the silent era that looks stunning in this 4K release from the Kino Lorber. One must remember to make exceptions for the age of this source, now over 100-years-old. A silent classic that is a must watch for cinephiles and horror fans.
