The Flintstones: The Complete Series (Blu-ray Review)

The Flintstones: The Complete Collection (Warner Bros.) Blu-ray PackshotThe Flintstones, the half-hour animated comedy series about the stone age family that gives the series its name, first aired in 1960 and ran through 1966 for six seasons. The Hanna-Barbera production takes place in a modernized version of the stone age and follows the couple Fred and Wilma Flintstone as well as their neighbors and best friends Barney and Betty Rubble. Later seasons would also bring the couples’ children Pebbles (the flintstones’ daughter) and Bam-Bam (the Rubbles’ son) into the mix – and lets not forget Dino, Fred and Wilma’s feisty pet dog, err, dinosaur. The series has often been likened to the animated version of The Honeymooners, and there are certainly a lot of similarities. Fred and Barney seem to always be scheming to deceive their wives so they can get away to play poker or go to the racetrack. Fred and Wilma have their domestic squabbles, but ultimately love each other unconditionally, and Fred and Barney are the best of buds always despite their, at times, combative relationship.

This collection from Warner covers all six seasons spread across nine Blu-ray Discs (and it also includes two bonus original movies). If you’re looking for the famous and catchy theme song “Meet the Flintstones,” then skip on ahead Season Three, Episode three (“Barney the Invisible”) to hear it.

The Video

The Flintstones arrives in a 1.33:1 AVC 1080p encodement on Blu-ray from Warner Bros. Generally speaking, this series looks good. There has been some cleaning up of the image, but it has not been totally scrubbed of grain and detail. The earlier seasons show the most instances of dirt and scratches in the film elements but starting from season three the image clears up a little more and patchiness in the fills on so on are more consistently clear. Colors are vibrant and we get good overall detail with very few moments of softness or video noise.

The Audio

The Flintstones collection comes only with a lossy English Dolby Digital 2.0 mono audio mix and the same for French and Spanish dubs. There is no lossless audio track and no 5.1 remix. The sound is good enough and matches how this series has always sounded over the years but remains a little boxy sounding at times.

The Supplements

The bonus materials included in this set are somewhat disappointing. While it’s great to get so many featurettes, especially ones with the legendary animators William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, these are all port-overs from previous releases and all in standard definition. There’s also an issue with one of the bonus movies included on here. The Stone Age Smackdown! movie, which is also available on Blu-ray as a standalone release in high definition, as its sound only coming through the left channel, at least for my copy. I don’t know if this is a mastering error or just that I got a faulty copy from Warner Bros.
