The Film

After the escapades of the Doug’s (Justin Bartha) bachelor party in Las Vegas, Stu (Ed Helms) has decided to go for a safe pre-wedding brunch. The only issue here is that Phil (Bradley Cooper) and Alan (Zach Galifianakis) have other plans. Traveling to Thailand for Stu’s bachelor party with Stu’s fiancee’s brother Teddy (Mason Lee) in tow, mayhem ensues. Like the original, the four toast to the pending evening only to wake up with no recollection of anything that has occurred. What results is the four having to re-piece the evening together through varying clues, all of which lead them through numerous funny, sometimes laugh-out-loud, moments.
It should come as no real surprise that Hangover, with the “Part II” attached instead of the “2”, is just a real continuation of the first film. All the main characters are back, including scene stealing funny man Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong). The scenes themselves may feel like a re-hash of the original, which may have some up in arms. Like the original, I avoided watching nearly all trailers and TV spots as I didn’t want to know anything at all. As the film began, I noticed a similarity. Virtually every scene felt like it was taken from the first film, only thrown against a different background. I will admit I was annoyed about 15 minutes into the film, as I had expected something brand new; however, once the “oh my god what exactly happened last night?” occurs, any thought of myself not enjoying this movie left the theater. And trust me, there is no short of moments where you’ll be laughing at levels that your stomach will hurt.
Hangover: Part II, despite recycling many of the original’s jokes, still had me laughing my ass off. Yes, I would have liked to see something a bit more unique from all those involved; however, I can’t really fault them as when you have a formula that works, stick to it. I do recommend Hangover: Part II. Just don’t go in expecting completely brand new material. Think of it as seeing the first one again, only in Thailand instead of Las Vegas.

The 2:40:1 framed, AVC MPEG-4 encoded transfer is just about perfect. The film’s color palette features mostly bronzed colors, yellows, gold and dark reds. All of these do look quite good and do hold a fine amount of detail. In particular, contrast levels are accurate and closeups do show beads of sweat in the initial morning after wake up. Exterior wide shots of Thailand are impressive. The lush jungle shots looked great. As expected from a recently released film, the film’s print is in pristine condition. There’s no evidence of print damage, grain or any anomalies. All in all, this is a fine effort from Warner.
Audio Quality

The film’s DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 is every bit as good as the aforementioned video. Dialogue is well reproduced via the center channel with no instance of drop out. Atmosphere is excellent, something that kind of surprised me in all honesty as the average comedy affair doesn’t have this much activity. Whether the quieter elevator moments or the high octane car chase, there’s almost always something going on here. Dynamics are great giving us a real sense of the heightened action occurring on screen. LFE is deep and immersive during the musical moments but also serves us an occasional response here and there. In all reality, everything just works quite well here.

While The Hangover: Part II won’t appeal to everyone, I did find myself laughing quite a bit. Naturally Warner has served up another excellent A/V presentation, but oddly chose not to included many features. Due to this, I can only recommend the biggest fans purchase this. Everyone else, give this “Part II” a rental.
