The Film

[Rating:1/5]

What seemed like it could have been an interesting premise for a horror/thriller in The Inheritance turned out to be no more than a dull, run-of-the-mill horror film, poorly executed and lacking all the good elements that go into making this sort of genre piece worthwhile. There is little in the way of gore, little suspense, and certainly no thrills.

The story follows five ambitious African-American cousins from five wealthy families who are called together for what they believe to be a family reunion. They each show up at an old, deserted house with visions of asking for money and finally getting a piece of what they feel they are owed, but what they get instead from their elders, is a surprise ceremony of tradition and a baring of secrets. Only too late do they realize these secrets of their slave ancestors’ past hold a dark debt they must pay in blood to get the inheritance they seek in order to maintain the legacy of their families.

The film stars an all-star cast featuring Keith David (Requiem for a Dream), DB Woodside (TV’s 24), Darrin Dewitt Henson (Stomp the Yard), Rochelle Aytes (Madea’s Family Reunion) and Shawn Michael Howard (Cable Guy) who are all strong in their roles, but can only do so much to carry this ultimately unsatisfying bit of horror.

Video Quality

[Rating:1.5/5]

The Inheritance‘s AVC encodement is soft and quite pushed straight through the film. It’s swarming in heavy video noise that is extremely distracting.

Audio Quality

[Rating:3/5]

There’s not much going on in the lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix, rather disappointingly for a film like this. There are only some slight, low-level ambience in the surround channels and barely audible atmospheric sound effects. High frequencies also seem just a bit too tweaked.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:1.5/5]

The Inheritance had a promising premise, but somewhere along the line it all went awry. Where is the gore, the suspense, the real tension that horror is supposed to supply? It’s all missing from this film. Since it neither fulfills its promise as a horror film nor looks that great on Blu-ray, I have to say skip this one altogether.
