The Series
[Rating:4/5]
A comedy for guys sums up cable network FX’s The League rather nicely. The show about a group of guys who run their own small fantasy football league and are willing to do just about anything to themselves and to each other in order to win their league’s trophy, the series is filled with guy comedy. It’s the sort of ribbing, one-liners and locker room rudeness that makes men, men. Guys know what I;m talking about here. If you are a guy, then you’ve been initiated into this club. You all know the drill of just how far you can go with insulting another guy who is your friend before you’ve crossed the line. That is the essence of The League.
What keeps the series interesting is not that these five guys are simply losers with no lives outside of fantasy football. Nope, these are regular guys with hot wives and girlfriends holding down power jobs and still getting fanatical over an absolute fantasy. Well, some of them are at least. Taco (Jonathan Lajoie), the series sole complete loser seems to get by with doing absolutely nothing.
Season Two makes things interesting by having Kevin’s (Stephen Rannazzisi) wife Jenny (Katie Aselton) join the league and compete against him for “the shiva” and the guys must deal with Ruxin’s (Nick Kroll) annoying brother-in-law Rafi (Jason Mantzoukas).
The League isn’t always consistently hilarious, its improvised humor can sometimes fall just a bit flat, but on the whole this outrageous comedy series is pretty top-notch and way out there; far too crude to ever make it onto network. This two-disc Blu-ray set also contains some extended episodes with language and nudity that can’t make it onto basic cable network FX.
Video Quality
[Rating:4/5]
The 1.78:1 1080p/24 AVC encodement of The League Season Two looks pretty good for a sitcom. You’re never going to get the nuance of a big budget Hollywood special effects blockbuster out of something like this, but it has good flesh tones, vibrant color reproduction and little video noise.
Audio Quality
[Rating:3.5/5]
There isn’t much to say about the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack. It’s very front-heavy with no discrete information in the surround channels, but it does have a decent amount of atmospherics. There isn’t low frequency extension to speak of either.

The Definitive Word
Overall:
[Rating:3.5/5]
FX continues to set the standard for the adult-friendly, non-premium cable network comedy series with this second season of The League and a few of their other series like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which had an off season, but is probably still worth catching. If you were a fan of this show, then thes is a good set to pick up.
