The Film

[Rating:1.5/5]

I went into The Legend of Bruce Lee optimistically, but was quickly dismayed. This low budget Chinese television series edited together into one long three-hour film is meant to be a biopic of the life of Bruce. What it is in actuality is one long melodrama filled with myth, nonsense, and things that surely never happened, though it purports to be the most detailed portrayal of the man’s life. Starting from his time as a youth in Hong Kong, through his years in America as a champion karate master, eventual star of martial arts films, and untimely death at the age of 32, it is one long series of martial arts challenges by Lee against others or others against Lee in absurd situations of mythic proportions. There are two things the film has going for it – it’s star Kwok-Kwan Chan bears a a strong resemblance to Bruce Lee, and the martial arts sequences are reasonably well choreographed and enjoyable. Beyond that, this series is a real stinker.

Video Quality

[Rating:3/5]

Image quality is definitely not any better than the actual production. It is soft, shows some haloing and some slight motion artifacts and video noise in its AVC/MPEG-4 encodement.

Audio Quality

[Rating:2.5/5]

A Mandarin Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack that has indistinct stereo imaging and rough sounding high frequencies is the only audio option. Dynamics are limited, but dialogue doesn’t have any crackle.

Supplemental Materials

[Rating:0/5]

No supplements.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:2.5/5]

Only the most ardent Bruce Lee and martial arts fans will need to view this. Everyone else need not apply. Leave this laughable low budget “biopic” on the shelf.
