The Film

[Rating:4.5/5]

Luscious, glamorous, beautiful, sexy – and I’m not just talking about Angelina Jolie. The Tourist is a lavishly layered, action-packed piece of escapist fun from writer/director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (The Lives of Others). Deliberately grand in its visual style, The Tourist, set and filmed on location in one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, Venice, is a feast for the eyes and a twisting, funny, and romantic tale that will keep you guessing and smiling.

The story is set around Frank (Johnny Depp), an unsuspecting American tourist, who is purposely approached by the beguiling Elise (Angelina Jolie) on a train to Venice as a part of her effort to fool Scotland Yard’s Inspector Acheson (Paul Bettany) and INTERPOL that he is her boyfriend wanted for financial fraud. Elise romances the hapless Frank and her plan works, but not only will they have to elude international law enforcement, they’ll have to run from Shaw (Steven Berkoff); he’s the British mobster that Elise’s real boyfriend stole the billions from.

It’s not often that a big budget Hollywood film with two A-list stars lives up to one’s expectations. Though The Tourist does have a few moments here and there where the story drags just a little bit, it is mostly a satisfying,  well done, beautifully filmed weekend escape worthy of its heavyweight lead actors.

Video Quality

[Rating:5/5]

The 1080p transfer of The Tourist from Optimum looks as beautiful as the luxuriant Venetian backdrop of the film itself. Flesh tones may look just a little on the red side, but the saturated colors look astoundingly rich, blacks are inky, shadow detail is nicely extended and the source is as clean as one would expect it to be.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4.5/5]

The sound is equal to the look of the transfer in the English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack. Lots of audible atmospherics in the surrounds balanced with clear dialogue in the front and a wide stereo spread impart a spacious and natural sound to the mix. There is a good dynamic range with deep bass and high frequencies that are easy on the ears.
