Jay Chou (The Green Hornet) may be at his height of popularity internationally given his recent stint as Kato in The Green Hornet, a disappointing big budget Hollywood film. This follow-up won’t help further his cause much at all. The Treasure Hunter is terribly derivative adventure film that finds its plot in other big budget Hollywood fare, such as The Mummy, Raiders of the Lost Arc, and Tomb Raider. Unfortunately, these elements are thrown together so haphazardly that The Treasure Hunter neither feels like an homage nor plagiarism, it simply feels silly and unintentionally funny.
Jay Chou plays Qiao Fei, some sort of superhumanly talented martial arts specialist whose mission in life is to find and protect archeological artifacts and return them to their rightful owners. When a group of crooked treasure hunters kidnaps his mentor’s daughter Lan Ting (Chiling Lin) in order to obtain a map to a mystical Lost City of unimaginable treasure, Qiao Fei swoops in to save Lan Ting. The two then find themselves in a mad dash across the desert to find the lost city as mystical group of warriors is in pursuit.
The Treasure Hunter is a confused mixture of adventure and romance film with so many half-baked subplots, loose ends, and poorly developed characters it is hardly worth sitting through. The acting is poor on every level, with the bad guys portrayed in swooping caricatures and the romance between Qiao Fei and Lan Ting stuck on some adolescent plain.

Treasure Hunter may be a terrible film, but at least it looks really good on Blu-ray. The AVC/MPEG-4 encodement is clean with sharp detail and a very thin layer of grain. Darks are deep, but shadow details are nuanced and nicely extended. Flesh tones are spot on are there are no hints of video noise or compression artifacts.

The audio is available in two lossless Dolby TrueHD 2.0 Stereo options, the original Mandarin and an English dub. The Mandarin track provides clean dialogue with good dynamics, aggressive stereo panning of sound effects and airy sounding high frequencies.

They haven’t gone out of their way to supply much for this release, giving only the theatrical trailer and additional Funimation trailers to fill out the disc.

Move along, there’s not much here to see. The premise had potential, but if you want to see a great adventure film along these lines, go pick up Raiders of the Lost Arc or Lawrence of Arabia. The Treasure Hunter isn’t even worth renting.
