The Series
[Rating:4/5]
Cartoon Network’s hit Adult Swim series The Venture Bros.: Complete Season 4 arrives on Blu-ray with all 16 episodes on a single disc. The series, uncensored in disc form, spoofs the 1960’s action cartoons such as Jonny Quest and The Herculoids. Season Four even finds itself lampooning Batman, Superman, The Hardy Boys and Astro Boy. For anyone who grew up with these heroes, The Venture Bros. will be an amusing, irony-filled journey down memory lane.
In this season, the Venture boys, Dean and Hank, and their “super scientist” father, Dr. Venture, must learn to deal with the departure of their government assigned bodyguard Brock Samson, while Henchman 21 deals with the death of 24 and other, more shocking secrets are revealed as battle between the Ventures and members of the Guild of bad guys continues.
The animation continues to be strong, the jokes are typically rude, crude, and hilarious, with numerous “in jokes,” spoofs of the superhero genre, pop culture, and crazily awkward situations.

The quality of the transfer for the Venture Bros. Looks really good in this release from Warner. The 1080p VC-1 encodement has bright colors with very detailed line art and little in the way of artifacts to distract from enjoyment of the visuals. There are some occasional issues with color banding, but they look to be designed into the animation art, rather than a consequence of the transfer.
Audio Quality

The sole audio program provided is a surprisingly good Dolby TrueHD 5.1 soundtrack. I say “surprisingly” because lots of television mixes tend to be rather straightforward and boring, but The Venture Bros.’ mix makes good use of all the channels, has relatively wide dynamic range, and a decent amount of low frequency extension.

The Definitive Word
Overall:
[Rating:4/5]
I’ve never watched The Venture Bros. before now, so I have to admit I cannot compare this season to previous ones, but I was immediately won over by this outrageous series. Both the superb animation and the insane, edgy comedy made me believe this one is a winner, not to mention the great looking HD transfer from Warner. Recommended.
