The Series

[Rating:3.5/5]

The second season of The World God Only Knows picks up where the first season left off, with Keima and his cute, almost childlike demon companion Elsie still on the hunt for loose souls from the underworld who inhabit the bodies of troubled young high school girls – Keima, the master of dating sims, forced to use his NEET skills in the real world to rescue them by changing their lives in a positive way. The series initially seems like business as usual and, with not much of an alteration between season one and two, it honestly would become difficult to see the point in continuing on, as much as I enjoyed the first season. However, the creators do, in fact, add in a twist – Elsie is visited by her old classmate Haqua, an immediate tsundere character who is at odds with Keima, but, as we come to find, may be harboring a secret liking towards him. Also, a challenge to help a student-teacher possessed by a loose soul and a new crappy dating sim that captivates Keima just may give him a new outlook on engaging with the real world. It’s enough of a change to leave one looking forward to season three.

Video Quality

[Rating:4/5]

I feel that The World God Only Knows, in its AVC/MPEG-4 1080p/24 encodement from Sentai Filmworks, looks just a little soft overall and shows too many instances of banding in its color fills to warrant a perfect score, despite relatively defined line art and vibrant color reproduction.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4/5]

A Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 stereo (48kHz/16-bit) and English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 stereo (48kHz/24-bit) dub are included. They have a decent amount of dynamic range with a strong sense of depth in the low frequency range and clear stereo imaging.

Supplemental Materials

[Rating:2/5]

Only the usual clean opening and closing animations with additional promotional materials are included.

The supplements:

  • Clean Opening Animation
  • Clean Closing Animation
  • Japanese TV Spots (1.78:1; 1080p/24; 00:02:02)
  • Japanese Release Spots (1.78:1; 1080p/24; 00:01:32)
  • Disc Credits
  • Sentai Filmworks Trailers

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:4/5]

Season Two of The World God Only Knows is just as cute and humorous as the first, albeit a bit repetitive, but with some new characters and slight alterations is acts as an interesting set up from what promises to be a good third season.
