The Film

[Rating:4.5/5]

The feature-length anime production Trigun: Badlands Rumble marks a triumphant return for the classic anime series Trigun, which has been gone for nearly half a decade. Updated with new, yet faithful production values, and some new characters to energize the story, Badlands Rumble reunites the beloved characters of the series in a gun totin’, rip-roaring, action filled, sci-fi western that is pure Trigun fun from start to finish.

Vash “The Humanoid Typhoon” the Stampede returns with his zany behavior in tow. It’s twenty years after he interceded in an outlaw’s robbery and now, that outlaw, Gasback, has resurfaced and is heading for a small desert town causing it to fill with bounty hunters from all around, including one Amelia McFly. Of course Vash is immediately smitten with the pretty young bounty hunter, and his over-the-top courtship of her is pure, classic Trigun humor. She wants nothing to do with him, but he sticks to her like glue, which is probably a good thing, because when Gasback does show, things get crazy. How will she get to Gasback when he’s being protected by a bodyguard – Vash’s old buddy Wolfwood? No wonder they call Vash “The humanoid typhoon,” he’s just trouble wherever he goes. He started this whole thing twenty years ago and now it’s all coming home to roost, but just what exactly does Amelia have to do with all of this?

The whole film plays like an extended episode of the classic Trigun series, like they haven’t missed a beat. What, this series was gone for 13-years? No way. This is must-see entertainment for fans of the old series with beautiful animation, good humor, and lots a great gunplay.

Trigun: Badlands Rumble comes to Blu-ray looking absolutely wonderful. There has been grain added to the image to give it a gritty appearance, but this doesn’t detract at all from the appreciation of the animation, the color saturation and detail of the line art. The AVC/MPEG-4 encodement just pops and shows no signs of aliasing or compression artifacts.

Audio Quality

[Rating:5/5]

Badlands Rumble sounds great in this Blu-ray release. Whether you choose the original Japanese language mix or the English dub, you get an aggressive, but well balanced Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix that fully utilizes the surround channels. Explosions fill the room, footsteps and gunfire come from the sides and rear, while there is a wide spread of sound and movement across the front as well. But never fear – the dialogue is never lost in this barrage of sound. I believe that the dialogue sounds a little more natural in the Japanese mix, but that is a slight complaint.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:4.5/5]

When a series is gone for so long one never knows what to expect when creators bring it back, but in the case of Trigun, I can say that Badlands Rumble is a complete success that was well worth the wait. Even better, this Blu-ray edition is a reference release that offers marvelous home theatre entertainment value. Recommended.
