The Film
[Rating:3.5/5]
A funny and inventive twist on slasher films that is bound to become a cult classic, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil stars Alan Tudyk (Firefly; Serenity) and Tyler Labine (Zack and Miri Make a Porno) in the titular roles as a couple of hapless “hillbillies” who find themselves in a heap of trouble during their fishing vacation.
Best friends Tucker (Tudyk) and Dale (Labine) have saved up and dropped all of their savings into a vacation home so they can get away and go fishing, but they find themselves caught up in the worst evil they could imagine when a series of misunderstandings occur and bodies start dropping like flies around them. A group of preppy college kids thinks they are psychopathic hillbilly killers and decide to attack them, especially after Tucker and Dale save one of their friends from drowning, the beautiful Allison (Katrina Bowden) and they mistake it for a kidnapping. But the college kids’ attempts at revenge all go awry and they end up doing more harm to themselves than to Tucker and Dale.
Tudyk and Labine have absolutely perfect chemistry on screen together and Tucker and Dale vs. Evil is pure comedic genius. If you’re a slasher film fan, then you will surely see the humor in this spoof. It’s an instant classic for sure, and is right up there with films like Shaun of the Dead when it comes to comedy horror.
Video Quality
[Rating:4/5]
The film was captured in the Red One Camera in high definition and comes to Blu-ray in a 1080p/24 AVC/MPEG-4 transfer. Contrast isn’t great, but flesh tones and detail are strong and there is little in the way of video noise. Shadow delineation is rather extended as well.
Audio Quality
[Rating:3.5/5]
Audio is a clean and dynamic DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix that shows no signs of clipping and has a relatively decent amount of ambient effects in the surround channels. Low frequency extension is deep without being boomy and highs sound natural.
