After dressing in drag for so long and playing “Madea,” I’m sure Tyler Perry must get downright tired of that sort of comedy film, so it is then no wonder that he will lapse into the world of “serious” drama. 2007’s Why Did I Get Married? is one of his attempts at a more serious side of filmmaking. Focusing on the lives of four married couples who get away on a couples’ retreat once a year to ask themselves, “why did I get married?,” the film is, sadly, more weighted down with melodrama than it is with actual drama.
Brought together by their friend, best selling author and psychologist Dr. Patricia Agnew (Janet Jackson), what starts out as a weekend away to strengthen their bonds turns out to be the tipping point in the relationship for each couple as secrets are revealed and problems in each couple’s marriage bubble up to the surface. Sheila (Jill Scott) and Mike (Richard T. Jones) are in an abusive relationship, Angela (Tasha Smith) belittles Marcus’ (Michael Jai White) inability to find work since ending his football career due to injury, Diane (Sharon Leal) and Terry (Perry) have a relationship strained by Diane’s heavy work duties, and Patricia (Jackson) and Gavin (Malik Yoba) have the heavy burden of loss hanging over their relationship like a black cloud. Can any of these couples survive their getaway together and beyond?
Perry, who takes on writing, directing, and production duties, is often a bit heavy-handed in his handling of the material and seems to have a need to tie up all the loose ends rather than let things be, as they would in the real world. Overall, however, Why Did I Get Married?, rises above its melodramatic burden through some great acting from the parties involved and is a decent, if not wholly effective, character study that is not limited in appeal to just couples or African Americans.

Why Did I Get Married? comes to Blu-ray looking relatively clean and film-like in its 1.85:1 AVC/MPEG-4 1080p encoding from Lionsgate, but overall detail is on the soft side. Backgrounds are a bit diffuse and the overall look of the image a little hazy. Colors are also a tad oversaturated and unnatural.
Audio Quality

The English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack is a subtle one with clean dialogue the stays mostly in the center channel. The surround channels carry mostly low-level atmospherics, but the resultant mix is a dry one. Still, it works for the material at hand.

All supplements are in standard definition and they don’t provide anything beyond the obligatory “behind-the-scenes” featurettes. Fans of Perry and the actors will probably, nonetheless, appreciate a bit more face time with the folks involved with the film.

Why Did I Get Married is a decent enough relationship drama that reaches across racial boundaries and should hit a mark with anyone who has been involved in a serious relationship or marriage. Despite Perry’s flawed direction in spots, some fine acting and a decent transfer to Blu-ray make it worthy rental material.
