The Film

[Rating:4/5]

Director Jann Turner spins a pleasing and amusing tale in this road movie/romantic comedy that successfully highlights the struggles of the modern South Africa without ever becoming mired in politics or the weightiness of social commentary.

Ayanda (Zandile Msutwana) is fast approaching the modern wedding she’s dreamed of with the dress, a wedding planner and the up-scaled restaurant all part of the plans, but her fiancé Elvis (co-producer Kenneth Nikosi; District 9; The No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency) has to manage to make it in time. But first, he has to get his childhood friend and best man Tumi (co-producer Rapulana Seiphemo; Tarzan and the Lost City) hundreds of miles away. It’s a road trip that turns into a comedy of errors that includes bad directions, accidents, racist Afrikaners, and a British hitchhiker named Rose (Jodie Whitaker; St. Trinian’s), a fun loving Doctor vacationing in South Africa to get away from her own failed engagement.

White Wedding is filled with calamity, budding romances, mistrust, and, most of a ll, infused with the essence of South Africa. Even in its very dialogue, this is African all the way. The characters make their way through the multilingual acrobatics of Zulu, English Afrikaans, and Xhosa, usually in one sentence. This is unlike most European or Hollywood films made of South Africa, where one language or the other is chosen, usually English.

This has been called the South African answer to The Hangover, but this is far more charming and culturally significant than The Hangover, although it will just as easily put a smile on your face.

Video Quality

[Rating:4/5]

For a low budget film, White Wedding’s AVC/MPEG-4 1080p encoding looks pretty good, with a relatively clean, stable image and consistent color reproduction. There is some softness here and there, particularly in distance shots, but overall it is a sharp presentation.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4/5]

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack is a subtle but effective mix. The surround channels are filled with atmospherics that engulf the listener, there are some occasional discrete pans through the room, and dialogue is clean and intelligible.

Supplemental Materials

[Rating:0.5/5]

This is a barebones release with no more than the original theatrical trailer (1.78:1; 480i/60) provided as a supplement.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:4/5]

Yet another film from the newly emergent, culturally relevant South Africa pleases with its charm, humor, and cultural significance. Recommended.
