Tyler Perry returns to his hit Why Did I Get Married? with the sequel Why Did I Get Married Too? and it plods down the same territories as its predecessor, only mildly evolving from less of a male-bashing genre-flick and into a supposedly positive look at black relationships in America.
Saddled to the previous film (so much so that watching this Blu-ray with the trivia track engaged is almost a must to follow along), Why Did I Get Married Too? follows four married couples at their annual couples’ retreat in the tropical paradise of Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas. As one woman’s (Jill Scott) ex-husband turns up to take part and try to break up her new marriage, the couples’ marital bliss is all short-lived. When they return home from their vacation, they must all come to terms with issues in their relationships like unemployment, infidelities, and divorce.
Marketed more as a comedy, Why Did I Get Married Too? is actually weakest in its comedic moments and most powerful in its drama, but it falls flat on the whole due to its unevenness and over willingness to bring everything — even the most outrageous scenarios — to a pleasing resolve. No doubt target audiences (and let’s be honest, that means minorities, as in “African Americans”) will most likely be pleased by this film, however, and its mostly positive portrayal of Black life and relationships, which is rather hard to come by in the fictional media these days. Still, Perry never panders to the audience or the critics, and he does show some of the dark sides of being in a relationship, but it ends up feeling forced and unnatural. The end result is a watchable film that is ultimately forgettable.

The AVC/MPEG-4 1080p encoding for Why Did I Get Married Too? is clean, as it should be, and processing issues aren’t really a problem, but there is an odd, hazy look to the image, colors don’t quite pop from the screen and detail fluctuates from sharp to soft, not extending very far into the background. It seems like a typical romantic comedy-type production that won’t dazzle with imagery, but looks passable in high definition.
Audio Quality

The audio for this release is serviceable, but boring to say the least. It offers a typical comedy/romance mix that is front-heavy and dialogue driven and surround channels that are pretty low and quiet most of the film.

The positive side of the supplements on Why Did I Get Married Too? is that they are all in 1080p. Unfortunately, the self-congratulatory, pseudo-relationship theory banter won’t make for much replay value.

Why Did I Get Married Too? is far too tied to its predecessor to stand on its own, too bland to be great comedy, and too typical to be great drama. It ends up being a middling film that will still be a success, but be forgotten once the credits start to roll. The Blu-ray release from Lionsgate can be described just about the same way — it doesn’t look or sound bad, but it’s no reference quality, must have release either. Save it as a rental for a rainy day.
