The Film
[Rating:2/5]
I couldn’t really tell you what Hollywood’s fascination is with the bawdy teen sex comedy, but it has been going on forever and doesn’t seem like it is going to end anytime soon. From Porky‘s to American Pie, the studios keep pushing out these shock comedy franchises with varying degrees of success. 2009’s Wild Cherry joins the party with its take on the genre. Flipping the template around and, finally, giving us a look at the scene from the girls’ point of view, the movie can sort of be looked at as the female version of American Pie. Does it work? Not quite.
The story revolves around three high school seniors, Helen (Tania Raymonde), Trish (Kristin Cavallari), and Katlyn (Rumer Willis) who discover that the boys of their high school’s football team have a particularly demeaning secret. It has been a long-held superstition dating back to the 1950s that unless each one of the teammates deflowers one of the school’s virgins, listed in team’s secret book, then they will have a losing season. This is heartbreaking to Helen whose boyfriend is on the team, especially since she was just about to “give it up” to him on a romantic evening alone while her father (played by former SNL star Rob Schneider) is away. This means war as the three friends unite to exact their revenge and offer up a little payback on the boys through pranks and withholding of sex until the book is destroyed.
There are certainly more than enough raunchy moments here to compare with the best of these types comedies. For example, there’s the accidental imbibing of some sexual fluids and a particularly awkward moment involving Helen, her dad, and a carrot. The problem is, this all seems too forced, too contrived, and, well, unoriginal. Haven’t we seen all this before? Wild Cherry does have more of a soft spot than its more testosterone-driven counterparts, given it is meant to appeal to more feminine sensibilities and ideas of romance. That may be the one thing that makes it somewhat tolerable, but overall, this is just comedy that will leave you wanting – to reach for the remote.

This is an inconsistent transfer overall. At times, it looks like any typical comedy, which is to say there isn’t much nuance to the imagery. It’s all mostly bright colors and certainly no special effects to show off that brand-new 62” HD display you just lugged into the house. It has generally strong foreground detail and even strong backgrounds, but the problems become noticeable after a while with video noise in darker portions of the picture and definite clipping of white levels.
Audio Quality
[Rating:3.5/5]
There’s really not much to this DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack. It just sort of sits there with dialogue in front and little audible atmospherics in the surround channels. At least the high frequencies sound natural and there isn’t any obvious clipping in dialogue.

Forget about extras. There’s not even a gag reel here, just a theatrical trailer for Wild Cherry in standard definition.
The Definitive Word
Overall:
[Rating:2.5/5]
Skip it. Wild Cherry‘s interesting premise of turning the raunchy teen sex romp around and taking it from the feminine point of view is uninspired, unoriginal and hampered on Blu-ray by a lackluster high definition transfer.
